Brownies were a staple in my home growing up.
My mom’s brownies were always the best. Cakey, gooey, and no frosting. They didn’t need it. These were delicious all by themselves. But of course, they are also perfect as a brownie sundae or the base of a brookie (a cookie and brownie mixed)! So, whip up a batch and enjoy my mom’s best brownies!
Ingredients:
- Shortening
- Cocoa powder
- Sugar
- Eggs
- Vanilla
- Flour
- Baking Powder
- Salt
Supplies:
- Medium bowl
- Large bowl
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Rubber spatula
- Electric hand mixer (or stand mixer)
- 9×13 pan
- Baking spray
All right, let’s get baking!

Step 1:
Scoop shortening into medium bowl. Measure out cocoa powder and place in bowl. Melt shortening and cocoa together in microwave. I start at one minute and then add more time in 15 second intervals until shortening is melted. Stir together and let cool slightly. It will be runny.

Step 2:
With hand mixer or in stand mixer, beat eggs and sugar together in a large bowl.

Step 3:
Add chocolate mixture to sugar and eggs and blend well.

Step 4:
Add remaining vanilla, flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.

Step 5:
Spray 9×13 dish with cooking spray. Scoop brownie mix into pan and level out with spatula. It will be thick!

Step 6:
Bake at 350 degrees for 28-30 minutes or until the batter is no longer jiggly. Remove from oven and let cool.

That’s it! I find it’s easier to slice brownies with a plastic knife. For some reason, they don’t stick as much that way. Enjoy plain with a glass of milk or serve them with ice cream!
Thanks Mom for the yummy recipe! It’s always our favorite! Mom’s best brownies for sure!
